Married to a successful businessman with radical political beliefs who
campaigned against slavery and the Corn Laws, Emmeline Pankhurst’s
mother Sophia Goulden was a passionate feminist and started taking her
daughters to women’s suffrage meetings in the 1870s.
In 2017, I was invited to submit a design for a memorial statue of Sophia Goulden by the Sophia Goulden Society, Laxey, Isle of Man. Goulden was born in Lonan, Isle of Man and the statue is set to be placed to demonstrate recognition of her role in the history of women’s suffrage.

Further work for the competition for a statue at Laxey, Isle of Man. Building upon the bust and manipulating imagery to present ideas.
